The Solar billboard light was introduced to a customer that needed to power a billboard in an area where the power supply was epileptic and inconsistent.
Ideasdot Technologies proposed a solution that will give illumination to the billboard for 72 hours without any need to recharge. With the latest technology of charge controllers, low energy consumption fluorescent bulbs and deep cycle batteries charged by polychrystaline solar modules, ideasdot technologies was able to achieve what was considered implausible.
YEAR:
2009
CLIENT:
KOLEX POINT ADVERTS FOR GLO NIGERIA LIMITED
SCOPE:
To power energy saving lighting source on double sided billboards (10 x 2M) at night. And to support/power a programmable LED display board
LIMITATIONS:
Site had very minimal space for solar panels, client has very low budget to work with. Time factor; To finish about 20 huge double sided billboard within a small timeframe
SITE SPECIFICATION AND INSTALLATION:
- 24HRS OPERATION AT AVERAGE 100W 220VAC (ONE LED DISPLAY BOARD 1M X 1M)
- 2 X 50W IDF BULBS FOR LIGHTING OF BOTH SIDES OF ADVERTISEMENT BILLBOARD.
- TOTAL DAILY POWER REQUIRED:
- 24X100 = 2400W FOR LED BOARD
- 10 X 120W;LIGHTING HOURS PER DAY X (2 X IDF BULB + BALLAST DC POWER CONSUMPTION) = 1200W
- IN TOTAL 3600W POWER NEEDED TO POWER BOTH LED DISPLAY AND LIGHTING.
- DUE TO CLIENTS FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS; THE EQUIPMENTS USED/ BOARD;
- (CLIENT WAS ADVISED TO USE DC POWER FOR POWERING LED BOARD AS CONVERSION TO AC FROM SOLAR DC POWER REDUCES EFFICIENCY)
- SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER
- SOLAR 1KVA INVERTER
- 4 X 200AH BATTERIES
- IDF 2 X 50W IP65 LAMPHEAD LIGHT FIXTURE
- 4 X 140W SOLAR PANELS
- WIRING, FITTINGS, RACKS ....
- 7-9A CHARGE CURRENT FOR 2 GROUPS OF 12V 200AH (SERIES - PARALLEL CONNECTION)
CONCLUSION:
Due to clients constraints, the installation had to maximize the use of power gotten from the solar panel, loss due to voltage drop in wires were kept to a minimal and battery rack was built as close as possible to the solar panels.
Installation allowed for 0.7 overall system efficiency factor.
